Community Website Launched

Our community website http://www.nangiloc.vic.au/ launched on 28th July was well attended with around 45 people learning what the website can offer them and our community. Designed for use by the members of our community, the website continues to be updated with events and is proving useful for event management in this busy community.

At the launch attendees delighted in the tastes of a ‘Cake Bake off' with  the most popular cake coming to a battle between a custard sponge and a Black Forest cherry gateau, with Chantelle's sponge the eventual winner.

Some extra community resources have been added (in Our Community) and Frank Tucker has given us permission to use his history of the district on our website (About the District).

Don't forget if you are looking for anything specific, use the search box (top right on the home page). just type in a key word, e.g. "Marita" and it will bring up the Mallee DGP entry for Marita Sleep.

Please send us anything you would like included on the website. Contact Fiona 50291404 or Maaike 50291523 or admin@nangiloc.vic.au

Counsellor Positioned at Nangiloc

Building a happy and resilient community starts with taking care of our personal wellbeing.

Our community is fortunate to have a Counsellor from the Mallee Division of General Practice positioned at the Nangiloc Maternal & Child Health Centre on every 2nd Thursday.

This person will be available by appointment offering free counselling opportunities for community members wishing to discuss in confidence, any issues of concern to them or someone they care about.

To arrange an appointment please call Marita ph 0429 866 025.

Drought Relief Workshops Provide Personal Development

Over the past 6 months, Drought Relief Officer with the Mallee Division of General Practice (MDGP) Marita Sleep has conducted the following free workshops in our community;  Grief and Loss, Active Listening and, The ‘No Bull Theory'.  These workshops have provided an opportunity for people to build skills in understanding reactions to change and improving personal responses.  Government funding is available to provide these workshops until June 2010.

In addition to these workshops Marita has conducted a free SQUARE (Suicide Questions Answers and Resources) training session at a CERT training evening which was open to the broader community.  A second SQUARE workshop (SQUARE Wrap) was held at which a ‘Pathway to Care Plan' for our community was developed. This suicide awareness training forms part of our Community Plan goal of instigating a "looking out for your neighbours" program.

The SQUARE training session was attended by 30 residents from our community and can be repeated with small groups within the community who missed out by simply contacting Marita at the above number.

Following on from these workshops Marita kindly provided our community with a private showing of the ‘Landmark' Australian movie ‘Men's Group the Movie'

While being described as ‘Funny' this ‘must see' Australian movie was described by our viewers as; intense, confronting, and unsettling, yet a movie that every father should see.

Pathway to Care Plan

The ‘Pathway to Care Plan',  developed at the SQUARE Wrap workshop and designed by Marita Sleep,  is a card very simply designed for recording three personal contact numbers to be used in case of  personal ‘Risk to Well being'.  It is a laminated card on which we can write our own personal contacts for; ICE (in case of emergency), My Mate for Support, and My GP.  The idea is to keep the card near the phone or on the fridge in ready access should we have an accident or melt down, so that either our self or someone else can call the relevant contact as needed.  The laminated surface allows for changing of the numbers as needed.  These cards will be available from the Nangiloc Post Office free of charge from Friday 4th September, so don't forget to collect yours.

Youth Action

Recently a meeting was held with students from Nangiloc/Colignan at the Red Cliffs Secondary College to discuss ideas for activities they would like to concentrate on in their community as part of the community plan. Discussions were also held with the Gr 5 & 6's at Nangiloc Primary to make them aware of the youth part of the community plan.

From these meetings a meeting was held on the 19th of August at the Nangiloc Hall to discuss and consolidate ideas the youths wish to concentrate on achieving in the future.

The list of ideas was split into priorities the youths would be able to work in with councils (MRCC) Youth Department which looks at school holiday programs and after school activities, as well as a list of priorities the youths in the area could concentrate on achieving.

Some of the ideas agreed upon were; investigating the opportunity for a games room/table tennis club, family fun days, visits to the skate park in Mildura, movie day in Mildura (part of school holiday program), scrapbooking groups, camps overnight and many others. A document will be completed detailing all the ideas voted upon and will be distributed out.

An action group will now be formed to work on achieving the actions proposed in the meeting as well as working with councils Youth area to allow the youths to achieve some of their actions.  Any youths keen to be involved in this action group can contact Jarrod Delahunty (MRCC) ph 50188296.

Craft ‘n Laugh Women's Group

Our first meeting went off without a hitch in August, with 9 ladies attending and a further 6 apologies.  Many dragged out the knitting needles for the first time in years.  Future meetings will be held on the first Monday of every month, with the next set to be Monday 7th September 7-9pm at Sue Mayr's home, Ph 50291570 for directions. Bring whatever you want to work on.  It doesn't matter if you don't know how to knit or stitch, just come for the chat or bring the darning. We have spare knitting needles.  This is a lot of fun!

Reading discovery

An exciting new ‘ Reading Discovery ‘ project operated by Mallee Family Care is currently being introduced to the Nangiloc/Colignan community.  Support for young mothers was identified in our Community Plan as an area of need.  The Reading Discovery Project will up skill parents of families with 0-5 year old children by helping them learn techniques in reading and playing with their children, with the aim of those children becoming ‘learning ready' in preparation for  the transition to school.

During mid August a volunteer from our community attended a 2 day training workshop in Mildura, at which Claire Jennings the designer of the project attended.  This volunteer as well as key people from Mallee Family Care and our community will be meeting in the near future to discuss how the ‘Reading Discovery' project will now be implemented in our community.

Future Community Events and Activities

As can be seen from the events calendar on the Nangiloc community website, a lot is happening in our community. Therefore the Events Action Group agreed to focus on 1-2 major events through the year, with money raised going to the kinder or the redevelopment of the hall or other high need local community groups.

The next major event the group is considering is a community Christmas party in conjunction with an outdoor movie night similar to that held in March this year. This would have a strong family and community focus, with numerous activities and displays being considered including, the possibility of the American Breed Classic Car Club showing their vehicles.  Other ideas being suggested include family fun games before the movie and a visit from Santa.  This event is currently  in the initial planning process and the Events Action Group invite anyone or any community groups interested in being involved  to contact, Janette Mason 50291535, Megan Pupillo 50291383, Jill Sleep 50291403 or Jarrod Delahunty (MRCC) 50188296.

In addition, the Events Action Group is looking into the possibility of establishing some sort of regular exercise classes at the Nangiloc Hall such as; Pilates, yoga or belly dancing. Sunraysia Community Health Service (SCHS) looks after community walking groups and have a structure set up through the Heart Foundation. If there is interest in again starting a walking group in the community then this will be looked at once the warmer weather is upon us. The possibility of a gym circuit is also being investigated.

Ultimately it is hoped that some sort of exercise program may be started in spring time.

The Nangiloc-Colignan Community Planning Group is planning two major fundraising events for 2010 including a Walkathon along the Murray River in April -May and a community "production" mid-year at The Hall.  These events will require drawing on help from our broader community to make them as successful as we envisage they can be. We welcome anyone who would like to find out how they can help with these events to contact a member of the Community Planning Group.

$80,000 Face Lift for Castle Crossing Road

Castle Crossing Road has recently undergone an $80,000 facelift with resurfacing of the road funded by MRCC.  This is an example of MRCC using our Community Plan to identifying maintenance to this road as a priority for road maintenance in our community.

Nangiloc - Colignan and District Community Association Inc

All of the preceding mentioned actions have come about through the implementation of the Nangiloc/Colignan & District Community Plan developed in 2008.  The Nangiloc-Colignan Community Planning Group (Community Planning Group) operates as a sub-committee of the Nangiloc -Colignan and District Community Association Inc. and is responsible for coordinating the implementation of the Community Plan.  If you are interested in getting involved or have suggestions please contact: planninggroup@nangiloc.vic.au  we meet once a quarter with the next meeting scheduled for Wednesday 14th October.  You can also contact: Jarrod Delahunty at MRCC.

Nangiloc - Colignan and District Community Association Inc

Notice of Annual General Meeting

Venue:  Mud Brick Recreation Hall, Colignan

  Date:  Wednesday 16th September 2009

  Time:  7.30pm.

The Nangiloc-Colignan and District Community Association Inc. would like to welcome anyone/everyone along who may be remotely interested in getting involved and knowing about local issues to its upcoming AGM.  Portfolios exist for people to operate in areas of interest. This is an opportunity to come along and meet people and get involved in/with our community.  The association only meets once or twice a year but serves an important role to our community by providing us with an incorporated body representing our whole community. The association's ‘Statement of Purpose' includes that it is;

1.To be a focal point for information exchange between Mildura Rural City Council and the residents/ clubs in the Nangiloc, Colignan, Iraak and Carwarp localities (the district)

2.To disseminate information from Mildura Rural City Council regarding State and Federal Grant monies to appropriate clubs/groups in the district.

3. To liaise with Mildura Rural City Council on Capital Works and routine maintenance matters affecting the district.

Nangiloc Community Emergency Response Team

The Nangiloc Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has 14 full time volunteers. Due to its remote location, the group is paged and we respond immediately, giving assistance, treatment and reassurance prior to the Paramedics arrival.  There are currently four teams within the CERT.  The CERT is on call 24 hours a day with each team rotating on a seven day roster. The area we cover is from Hattah/Kulkyne National Park to Iraak, and out to the Calder Highway, and occasionally as far away as Karadoc. We have a fully equipped SUV supplied by Ambulance Victoria, and we are trained in the use of equipment required to stabilize a patient until the Paramedics arrive. Our ongoing Accreditation training is required once a month and our certificate is Emergency Trauma Response Certificate 3 +.  We are trained by the Paramedics in the use of specialized pain relief, defibrillation etc.  We work under the protocol of Ambulance Victoria.  CERT is a terrific volunteer organisation.  The feelings that come from helping people, and knowing that you have made a difference are unbelievable for anyone that has a passion for helping people in need of emergency medical treatment in remote areas.  The Nangiloc CERT has been established for 5 years and welcome enquires from members of our community who may be interested in joining the team. Any interested members of the community should contact Murray Allomes, Group Leader Nangiloc/Colignan CERT 0488 291519.

Kulkyne Way Landcare Group

The Nangiloc / Colignan and District Primary School recently received some books and $200 from the Landcare Group to help them with their school vegetable patch (Grade 2). The Landcare group will also be running a learning activity at the school about Regent Parrots, as part of Threatened Species Day in September.

Preparation of the Kinder Environmental Management Plan for the Nangiloc and District Kindergarten is underway.

On Sunday, September 13th from 2.00pm the Landcare group will be running their annual 4WD tagalong tour in Hattah Kulkyne National Park. The tour will be departing from the information notice board just inside the Park entrance on the River Track.  It's a great chance to visit some new areas using the management vehicle tracks - all welcome.

The Colignan walking trail (behind the pool) will soon be sprayed to get rid of the Bridal Veil Creeper that is getting a hold there.

Don't forget, membership is only $20 for 5 years. Contact Fiona 50291404 or Maaike 50291523 or landcare@nangiloc.vic.au

Nangiloc Tennis Club 2009

There are two Nangiloc teams in the winter competition this year, played on Saturdays at 1pm.  A team has at least 8 players but only 6 play per week (3 men and 3 ladies).  We play 3 eight game sets - 2 each of men's and ladies and 1 set of mixed.  Our opponents this year are:  South West Sloggers, South West Slammers, Koorlong and Koorlong Cruisers.

Both Nangiloc teams (Nangiloc Red and Nangiloc Blue) will be in the finals this year and we are hoping one of them will come home with the trophy!!

Nangiloc Tennis Club has been very fortunate to have Geoff Peters looking after our courts - watering and rolling them each week, many thanks to Geoff. The players (South West and Koorlong as well as Nangiloc) have been most appreciative.  They are the best courts to play on in the district!!

If anyone out there would like to come and have a hit, please feel free to join us at practise on Thursdays from 4.30pm until dark.  Our season will finish mid September.  We are always looking for new players, anyone interested in playing please phone Sue or Tony Mason (50291451).  Our winter tennis competition is a very inexpensive sport and very social.  It is a great way of meeting the locals.
