"Fire" at Nangiloc and District Kindergarten

Children from Nangiloc and District Kindergarten received a visit on Wednesday from Department of Sustainability and Environment Forest Manager, Phillip Murdoch. However, when Mr Murdoch's trunking radio alerted him to a "fire" the children were able to see just what was involved in getting ready to fight a bushfire. Mr Murdoch quickly dressed in his fire-fighting overalls, hardhat, boots and goggles. He carried a rakehoe and an axe, the latter a souvenir of his time spent in the USA fighting fires. The children helped measure wind speed and temperature before Mr Murdoch left in his fire vehicle, with sirens wailing and lights flashing.

The visit raised awareness of Bushfire Action Week, October 11-18, calling to action all Victorians to work together on being fire ready. The children were reminded not to leave campfires unattended when camping this summer and to talk to their parents about their fire plan. With a number of the childrens' parents volunteering in the Country Fire Authority or working as professional fire-fighters, it was also a good time to remind these children to be proud of the wonderful, but difficult job these fire-fighters are faced with this summer.
