Funding available for community projects - 3/8/2009

Mildura Rural City Council is offering financial assistance to community groups and organisations that are planning innovative projects to support the needs, health and well-being of local people.

Applications for Council's Community Project Grant program open today and all not-for-profit groups, clubs, schools and organisations based in the municipality are encouraged to apply. Up to $6,000 is available.

Portfolio Councillor for Community Development Vernon Knight said the Community Projects Grant program was developed to enable the completion of important projects that benefit and support local communities.

"Council has supported some really interesting and successful projects through this grants program over the years," he said.

In 2008, the Community Project Grants program injected more than $68,000 in to communities across the region through 17 different grants. Among recipients was the Nina Rose Foundation who used a $950 grant to install a hot water system in their noodle van. The Foundation sells noodles to raise money for housing and education for East Timorese people.

The Murrayville Community College used a $5100 Community Project Grant to hold Murrayville on the Green, a free concert designed to bring people together following traumas within the community.

College principal Hilary Thiele said the financial assistance was vital to the success of the event.

"We used the grant to pay musicians who performed at the event and also to build a mobile stage for them to perform on. The entire event was a huge success. People are still talking about it and I think it helped boost morale and resilience within our tight-knit community."

Cr Knight said groups had until Friday 11 September 2009 to submit an application for a Community Project Grant.
