| | | | | The first round of Mildura Rural City Council’s popular Recreation Grants Scheme for 2010/11 is now open, providing opportunities for local sport and recreation groups to secure cash for important projects. Comprising of two separate grants, the program is designed to assist not-for-profit clubs, groups and organisations that provide sport and recreation opportunities throughout the region. Portfolio Councillor for sport and recreation Sue Nichols expects Council to receive an influx of applications before they close on Thursday 16 September 2010. “The Recreation Grants Scheme is very popular, and considering sport is a key element in many of our communities it’s easy to see why,” she said. “There are so many different groups and clubs out there who are run on a voluntary basis and who work really hard to fundraise for certain projects and activities. These grants can help with fundraising.” Last year Council provided 53 grants valued at more than $157,000 through the Recreation Facilities Upgrade Grant and the Recreation Development Grant programs. Applications were extremely competitive with many worthwhile projects and initiatives unfortunately missing out. Provided on a $2 for $1 basis, up to $6000 is available through the Recreation Facilities Upgrade Grant for clubs and groups to make improvements, upgrades or extensions to existing or new facilities. The Recreation Development Grant is also available on a $2 for $1 basis and aims to enhance new and existing leisure initiatives at a grass roots level which have the potential to expand the range and quality of recreation opportunities in the region. Up to $1000 is available and can used for a range of initiatives such as training programs for umpires and coaches, specialised clinics or purchasing new equipment. “These grants provide a great opportunity for local sport and recreation groups and I encourage them to apply. Application forms are available at all Council Service Centres and online at www.mildura.vic.gov.au/grants” Applications close Thursday 16 September 2010.
