Mildura Rural City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to recreation this week by providing more than $44,000 to local community organisations for facilities upgrades and development projects. Council announced clubs and organisations would receive funding for 29 different projects in the second round of its 2008/2009 Recreation Grants Scheme at an awards ceremony on Wednesday night. Deputy Mayor, Councillor Sue Nichols said the Recreation Grants Scheme supported communities at a grass-roots level to promote sport and recreation. "Volunteer organisations like these play a vital role in the social and recreational culture of our communities. It's great to see that such a wide variety of groups, from right across the municipality were successful in the grant applications." Council received a total of 34 applications in the second round of the 2008/2009 Recreation Grants Scheme which includes two different categories, the Recreation Development Grant and the Recreation Facilities Upgrade Grant. "The grants are way that Council can help local groups and organisations increase opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy recreational activities," Cr Nichols said. Recipients of the grant included Nangiloc and District Bowls Club, which received $2000 to complete a hot water safety project; Nangiloc and District Football Netball Club, which received $2000 to upgrade a freestanding gable at its clubrooms; |
