Nangiloc and District Kindergarten receives grant to prepare Environmental Management Plan

The Nangiloc and District Kindergarten have been awarded a Yates Junior Landcare grant to help promote sustainable practices at kinder and learn more about their surrounding natural environment.

The plan will include an energy, waste and water audit, identifying short and long term targets to increase sustainability. Already, the first priority to reduce energy use has been identified - an energy guzzling fridge using four times as much power as a new one. The kindergarten children will be asked for their thoughts about saving water and energy and reducing waste, and be involved in fun activities to encourage practice change.

Ideas for the kindergarten grounds include a Learnscape which addresses sustainable, healthy food production and recommends water-efficient native shrubs and groundcovers to provide habitat and food for native fauna. The children and parents will be encouraged to contribute their ideas for the kindergarten Learnscape and be involved in implementing "Act now" ideas such as building on existing worm farms and food gardens.

The kindergarten is adjacent to the Murray River with large areas of surrounding native vegetation. The plan will identify local natural assets such as Regent Parrots and river health, which will inspire children and parents to undertake action to protect the surrounding environment.

Kulkyne Way Landcare Group (KWLG) have identified Junior Landcare as a key interest and already have a strong partnership with the Nangiloc / Colignan and District Primary School. KWLG is keen to extend this to the kindergarten and playgroup and will assist in all stages of the Environmental Management Plan.
