Revamped Red Cliffs Library to reopen
After six months of building and construction works, the dust has been cleared and the new-look AS Kenyon Library at Red Cliffs will re-open this weekend.
A far cry from the cramped 1950s brick building that was previously used, the library has been opened up and is now triple the size of it's former self. Flooded with natural light, the refurbished building is a premier community facility.
Portfolio Councillor for Arts and Human Services Judi Harris said the people of Red Cliffs and surrounding area would be thrilled with their new library.
"I'm sure everyone will agree that it has definitely been worth waiting for," she said.
The new library features relaxing spaces for reading and studying, comfortable new furnishings, disabled access, vibrant and easily accessible new shelving, a community meeting room, toilet facilities and an after hours return chute.
The $850,000 redevelopment included a $500,000 grant from the state government's Living Libraries funding program.
"Libraries have come a long way from the stereotypical stuffy spaces where you go for books and you're not allowed to talk. They are now dynamic communtiy facilities where people from all walks of life go for a range of services and resources. The redevelopment of the Red Cliffs Library has certainly brought it into the twenty-first century."
Once reopened, the Red Cliffs Library opening hours will be extended to run through lunch times, and staff numbers have been increased to accommodate for an anticipated spike in patronage. The popular Literacy PC software will also be available and visitors will have more access to internet and computer software than previously.
"To coincide with the opening of the new library a range of new resources will be introduced and the ever-popular Storytime program will run at Red Cliffs each Friday from 10.15am."
