Rubbish and recycling plan on display - 15/3/2010

Our written submissions did make a difference: From the report "Overwhelming support of the provision of recycling drop off points at strategic locations. Locations offered were the Nangiloc school several times, or general store, oval, hall"

The proposed actions in the report include:

Introduce waste/recyclables/cardboard skips at Lindsay Point, Mittyack and Nangiloc/Colignan

Please remind MRCC that we need an extra skip at a central location, like the school, as well as at the Nangiloc Transfer Station on Castles Crossing Rd.

Mildura Rural City Council wants to work with the community to reduce the amount of waste we produce by 10 per cent in the next five years.

Council adopted a detailed draft plan outlining how this and other waste management goals will be achieved by 2015, at its February ordinary Council meeting.

The Draft Municipal Waste Management Plan was developed using community feedback on landfill, green waste, organics and composting, garbage disposal, hard waste and recycling issues and takes into account which local waste management services and facilities residents use.

Councillor John Arnold said the draft plan was now on public display and Council was seeking community feedback on it.

Developing the Draft Municipal Waste Management Plan has been a very comprehensive process, he said.

As our population increases so too will the amount of waste we create and Council wants to manage the needs of the community in an integrated, cost effective and environmentally sustainable manner.

Key actions outlined in the Plan include increased community engagement and awareness campaigns to maximise recycling and minimise waste, development of a litter strategy and developing a green purchasing policy for Council.

Residents in the Mildura area will be given the option to swap their existing 120 litre kerbside collection garbage bin for a smaller 80 litre bin in a bid to reduce waste and Council will also be undertaking a feasibility study for the introduction of a fortnightly kerbside green waste collection service, Cr Arnold said.

In the southern areas of the municipality, towns along the Mallee Track including Hattah, Ouyen, Walpeup, Underbool and Murrayville, 240 litre kerbside garbage bins will be reduced to 120 litres and a fortnightly 240 litre kerbside recycling bin service introduced.

Other initiatives will see waste, recyclable and cardboard skips introduced at Lindsay Point, Mittyack and Nangiloc/Colignan; public recycling bins installed in Cowangie, Tutye, Torrita and Boinka; and a new green waste drop off point considered for the Mildura irrigation area.

Households are not the only contributors to waste in our community and Council will employ a Commercial Waste Officer for two years to investigate and better understand the waste management requirements of our commercial and industrial sector, Cr Arnold said.

The Draft Municipal Waste Management Plan is currently on display and can be viewed online at http://www.mildura.vic.gov.au/Page/page.asp?Page_Id=64&h=0 or call 5018 8100 to request a hard copy be mailed to you.
